2 Kings

Chapter 15

A nation drifts away from God.

1In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam, king of Israel, Azariah, the son of Amaziah, king of Judah, became king.

2He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for fifty-two years. His mother's name was Jecoliah, from Jerusalem.

3Azariah did what Yahweh considered right, just as his father Amaziah had done.

4However, the pagan shrines were not removed, and the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.

5Yahweh afflicted the king with a skin disease that lasted until the day he died. He lived in a separate house. Jotham, the king's son, was in charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.

6The rest of Azariah's actions and everything he did are written in the official records of the kings of Judah.

7Azariah died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David, and his son Jotham became king in his place.

8In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah, king of Judah, Zechariah, the son of Jeroboam, ruled over Israel in Samaria for six months.

9He did what Yahweh considered evil, just as his ancestors had done. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, son of Nebat, which led Israel to sin.

10Shallum, son of Jabesh, plotted against Zechariah. He attacked and killed him in public and then became king.

11The rest of Zechariah's actions are written in the official records of the kings of Israel.

12This fulfilled the word of Yahweh, which he had spoken to Jehu: "Your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation."

13Shallum, son of Jabesh, began to rule in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah, king of Judah, and he reigned in Samaria for one month.

14Menahem, son of Gadi, marched from Tirzah to Samaria. He attacked Shallum, son of Jabesh, in Samaria, killed him, and became king in his place.

15The rest of Shallum's actions, including the details of his conspiracy, are written in the official records of the kings of Israel.

16From Tirzah, Menahem attacked Tiphsah and everyone in it, as well as its surrounding areas. He attacked it because they wouldn't open their gates to him, and he ripped open all their pregnant women.

17In the thirty-ninth year of Azariah's reign as king of Judah, Menahem, son of Gadi, became king of Israel and ruled in Samaria for ten years.

18He did what Yahweh considered evil. All his life, he did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam, son of Nebat, had caused Israel to commit.

19Pul, the king of Assyria, invaded the land. Menahem gave Pul 1,000 talents of silver so that Pul would support him and confirm his rule over the kingdom.

20Menahem collected the money from Israel, from all the wealthy and powerful men, with each man contributing fifty shekels of silver to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria turned back and did not stay in the land.

21The rest of Menahem's actions and all that he did are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel, aren't they?

22Menahem died and was buried with his ancestors, and his son Pekahiah became king in his place.

23In the fiftieth year of Azariah's reign as king of Judah, Pekahiah, son of Menahem, began to rule over Israel in Samaria for two years.

24He did what Yahweh considered evil. He did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam, son of Nebat, had caused Israel to commit.

25Pekah, son of Remaliah, who was Pekahiah's captain, conspired against him. Pekah attacked him in Samaria, in the fortress of the royal palace, along with Argob and Arieh. Fifty men from Gilead were with Pekah. He killed Pekahiah and became king in his place.

26The rest of Pekahiah's actions and all that he did are recorded in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

27In the fifty-second year that Azariah was king of Judah, Pekah son of Remaliah began to rule over Israel in Samaria for twenty years.

28He did what was evil in Yahweh’s sight. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which had caused Israel to sin.

29During the reign of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath Pileser king of Assyria came and captured Ijon, Abel Beth Maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee—all the land of Naphtali—and took the people captive to Assyria.

30Hoshea son of Elah conspired against Pekah son of Remaliah, attacked him, killed him, and became king in his place. This happened in the twentieth year of Jotham son of Uzziah.

31The rest of Pekah’s actions and all that he did are recorded in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

32In the second year that Pekah son of Remaliah was king of Israel, Jotham son of Uzziah king of Judah began to rule.

33He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jerusha, daughter of Zadok.

34He did what was right in Yahweh’s eyes, just as his father Uzziah had done.

35However, the places of worship on high hills were not removed. The people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there. Jotham built the upper gate of Yahweh’s temple.

36The rest of Jotham’s actions and everything he did are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah.

37In those days, Yahweh began to send King Rezin of Syria and Pekah, Remaliah’s son, to attack Judah.

38Jotham died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David, his father. His son Ahaz became king after him.
