Thessalonians

Chapter 5

Living ready for Jesus' return.

Now concerning the times and dates, brothers and sisters, you don’t need us to write anything to you.

For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

When people are saying, “Peace and safety,” sudden destruction will come upon them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.

You are all children of light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to darkness.

So then, let’s not be asleep like others, but let’s stay awake and be alert.

For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.

But since we belong to the day, let’s be sober, wearing faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.

For God did not destine us for punishment, but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.

So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

Brothers and sisters, we ask you to show appreciation for those who work hard among you, who lead you in the Lord, and who advise you.

Respect and love them very highly because of the work they do. Live in peace with each other.

We urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are lazy, encourage the timid, help the weak, and be patient with everyone.

Make sure that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good for each other and for everyone.

Always be joyful.

Pray continually.

Give thanks in all circumstances, because this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

Do not put out the Spirit's fire.

Do not treat prophecies with contempt.

Test everything. Hold on to what is good.

Stay away from every form of evil.

May the God of peace himself make you completely holy. And may your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.

Brothers and sisters, pray for us.

Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss.

I command you in the Lord to have this letter read to all the holy brothers and sisters.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
