Now concerning food offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes people proud, but love builds them up.
If anyone thinks they know something, they don’t yet know it as they should.
But if anyone loves God, that person is known by God.
Therefore, regarding eating food offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and there is no God but one.
For even if there are so-called “gods” in heaven or on earth—and indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”—
But for us, there is only one God, the Father, who made everything, and we live for him. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom everything was made, and we live through him.
However, not everyone has this knowledge. Some people are still so used to idols that when they eat food offered to an idol, they think of it as truly being offered to an idol, and because their conscience is weak, it becomes defiled.
But food will not bring us closer to God. If we don’t eat, we are no worse off; and if we do eat, we are no better off.
But be careful that your freedom doesn’t become a trap for those who are struggling.
Because if someone with a weak conscience sees you, who have this knowledge, eating in an idol's temple, won't that encourage them to eat food offered to idols?
And because of your knowledge, the person who is struggling—the brother for whom Christ died—is destroyed.
So, when you sin against other believers and hurt their weak conscience, you are sinning against Christ.
Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I don't cause my brother to stumble.
