1All the people of Israel were registered by their family lines, and their names are written in the book of the kings of Israel. The people of Judah were taken as prisoners to Babylon because they disobeyed God.
2The first people who lived in their properties in their cities were the Israelites, the priests, the Levites, and the temple servants.
3In Jerusalem lived people from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh:
4Uthai, son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, from the descendants of Perez, son of Judah.
5From the Shilonites: Asaiah, the oldest son, and his own sons.
6From the sons of Zerah: Jeuel and his relatives, 690 people.
7From the sons of Benjamin: Sallu, son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah,
8also Ibneiah, son of Jeroham; Elah, son of Uzzi, son of Michri; and Meshullam, son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah;
9and their relatives, listed by their family generations, totaling 956 people. All these men were leaders of their family groups within their ancestral houses.
10Among the priests were Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, and Jachin,
11and Azariah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, who was the leader of God's temple;
12and Adaiah, son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah; and Maasai, son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer;
13and their relatives, who were leaders of their family groups, totaling 1,760 capable men for the work of serving in God's temple.
14Among the Levites were Shemaiah, son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, from the descendants of Merari;
15also Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal, and Mattaniah, son of Mica, son of Zichri, son of Asaph,
16and Obadiah, son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun, and Berechiah, son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.
17The gatekeepers were Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their relatives (Shallum was the chief gatekeeper).
18who had previously served at the king's eastern gate. They were the gatekeepers for the camp of the Levites.
19Shallum, the son of Kore, who was the son of Ebiasaph, who was the son of Korah, and his relatives from his father's family, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of service. They were the keepers of the doors of the tent. Their ancestors had been in charge of Yahweh's camp, guarding the entrance.
20In the past, Phinehas, Eleazar's son, was their leader, and Yahweh was with him.
21Zechariah, Meshelemiah's son, was the gatekeeper for the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.
22All these men chosen to be gatekeepers at the entrances numbered 212. Their family lines were recorded in their villages. David and Samuel the seer appointed them to this position of trust.
23So they and their children were responsible for guarding the gates of Yahweh's house, which was the tent, by shifts.
24There were gatekeepers on all four sides: east, west, north, and south.
25Their relatives, who lived in the villages, were to come in every seven days, from time to time, to be with them.
26The four chief gatekeepers, who were Levites, held a position of trust and were in charge of the rooms and the treasuries in God's house.
27They stayed near God's house because that was their duty, and part of their duty was opening it every morning.
28Some of them were responsible for the service vessels; these were brought in and taken out by count.
29Some of them were also assigned to the furniture, all the vessels of the sanctuary, the fine flour, the wine, the oil, the frankincense, and the spices.
30Some of the priests' sons prepared the mixture of spices.
31Mattithiah, a Levite who was the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with the things baked in pans.
32Some of their relatives, from the sons of the Kohathites, were in charge of the show bread, to prepare it every Sabbath.
33These are the singers, heads of the Levite families, who lived in the rooms and were free from other duties, because they worked day and night.
34These were heads of Levite families throughout their generations, important men. They lived in Jerusalem.
35Jeiel, the father of Gibeon, whose wife's name was Maacah, lived in Gibeon with
36his firstborn son Abdon, along with Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, and Nadab.
37Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth.
38Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. They lived in Jerusalem with their relatives.
39Ner was the father of Kish. Kish was the father of Saul. Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.
40Jonathan's son was Merib Baal. Merib Baal was the father of Micah.
41Micah's sons were Pithon, Melech, Tahrea, and Ahaz.
42Ahaz was the father of Jarah. Jarah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri. Zimri was the father of Moza.
43Moza was the father of Binea. Binea's son was Rephaiah. Rephaiah's son was Eleasah. Eleasah's son was Azel.
44Azel had six sons: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. These were Azel's sons.
