Chapter 29

Israel's family story retold.

King David said to the whole assembly, “My son Solomon, whom God alone has chosen, is still young and inexperienced. The task is enormous, because this palace is not for a man, but for Yahweh God.”

“With all my strength, I have prepared for the house of my God: gold for gold items, silver for silver items, bronze for bronze items, iron for iron items, and wood for wooden items. I have also provided onyx stones, stones to be set, stones for mosaics, various colored stones, all kinds of precious stones, and plenty of marble.

In addition, because I truly care about the house of my God, I am giving my personal treasure of gold and silver to the house of my God, in addition to everything I have already prepared for the holy house.

This includes three thousand units of gold from Ophir and seven thousand units of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the buildings.

There is gold for gold items, silver for silver items, and for all kinds of work to be done by skilled craftsmen. Now, who among you is willing to dedicate themselves to Yahweh today?”

Then the leaders of the families, the leaders of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and the officials in charge of the king’s work, all offered willingly.

They gave the following for the service of God’s house: five thousand units of gold and ten thousand darics, ten thousand units of silver, eighteen thousand units of bronze, and one hundred thousand units of iron.

Anyone who had precious stones gave them to the treasury of Yahweh’s house, which was managed by Jehiel the Gershonite.

The people rejoiced because they offered willingly, giving their offerings to Yahweh with complete sincerity. King David also rejoiced with great joy.

Then David praised Yahweh in front of the whole assembly, saying, “May you be praised, Yahweh, the God of our father Israel, forever and ever.

Yours, Yahweh, are the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty! Everything in heaven and on earth belongs to you. Yours, Yahweh, is the kingdom, and you are honored as the supreme head over everything.

Both wealth and honor come from you, and you rule over everything! In your hand are power and might! It is within your power to make people great and to give strength to everyone!

Now therefore, our God, we thank you and praise your glorious name.

But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly? For everything comes from you, and we have only given back what is already yours.

For we are temporary residents and foreigners before you, just like all our ancestors. Our time on earth is like a fleeting shadow, with no lasting permanence.

Yahweh our God, all this abundance that we have prepared to build a house for your holy name comes from your hand, and it all belongs to you.

I also know, my God, that you test hearts and are pleased with integrity. As for me, with a sincere heart I have willingly offered all these things. And now I have joyfully seen your people, who are here today, offer willingly to you.

Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our ancestors, keep this desire in the hearts of your people forever, and prepare their hearts for you.

And give my son Solomon a complete heart to obey your commands, your testimonies, and your statutes, to do all these things, and to build the palace for which I have made provisions.”

Then David told the entire assembly, “Now praise Yahweh your God!” So the whole assembly praised Yahweh, the God of their ancestors, and bowed down and prostrated themselves before Yahweh and the king.

The next day, they sacrificed to Yahweh and offered burnt offerings to Yahweh: one thousand bulls, one thousand rams, and one thousand lambs, along with their drink offerings and many other sacrifices for all of Israel.

They ate and drank before Yahweh that day with great joy. They then made Solomon, David’s son, king a second time, anointing him before Yahweh as ruler, and Zadok as priest.

So Solomon sat on Yahweh’s throne as king, succeeding his father David, and he prospered; all of Israel obeyed him.

All the officials, the mighty men, and also all of King David’s sons submitted themselves to King Solomon.

Yahweh greatly honored Solomon in the sight of all Israel and gave him a royal majesty greater than any king who had been before him in Israel.

David, Jesse's son, ruled over all of Israel.

He ruled over Israel for 40 years. He reigned in Hebron for seven years and in Jerusalem for 33 years.

He died at a ripe old age, having lived a full life with much wealth and honor. His son Solomon became king after him.

The accounts of King David, from beginning to end, are written in the historical records of Samuel the seer, Nathan the prophet, and Gad the seer.

These records describe his entire reign, his power, and what happened to him, to Israel, and to all the other kingdoms in the lands.
