Chronicles

Chapter 20

Israel's family story retold.

The next spring, at the usual time for kings to go to war, Joab led the army out. They destroyed the land of the Ammonites, then came and surrounded the city of Rabbah. David, however, stayed in Jerusalem. Joab attacked Rabbah and completely destroyed it.

David took the crown from the head of their king. It weighed about seventy-five pounds of gold and had precious stones on it. It was placed on David's head. David also took a great deal of plunder from the city.

He brought out the people who were in the city and had them cut with saws, iron picks, and axes. David did this to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all his people returned to Jerusalem.

After this, a war broke out with the Philistines in Gezer. Sibbecai, from Hushah, killed Sippai, who was one of the descendants of the giants. The Philistines were defeated.

There was another war with the Philistines. Elhanan, son of Jair, killed Lahmi, the brother of Goliath from Gath, whose spear shaft was as thick as a weaver's beam.

There was another war in Gath, where there was a very tall man who had twenty-four fingers and toes, six on each hand and six on each foot. He was also a descendant of the giants.

When he challenged Israel, Jonathan, the son of Shimea (David's brother), killed him.

These men were descendants of the giants in Gath, and they were killed by David and his servants.
