Chapter 2

Israel's family story retold.

1These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,

2Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

3Judah's sons were Er, Onan, and Shelah. These three were born to him by Shua's daughter, a Canaanite woman. Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the Lord's sight, so the Lord killed him.

4His daughter-in-law Tamar gave birth to Perez and Zerah. Judah had a total of five sons.

5Perez's sons were Hezron and Hamul.

6Zerah's sons were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara; five of them in all.

7Carmi's son was Achar, who brought trouble to Israel when he took things that were set apart for destruction.

8Ethan's son was Azariah.

9Hezron's sons who were born to him were Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai.

10Ram was the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, who was a leader of the people of Judah.

11Nahshon was the father of Salma, and Salma was the father of Boaz.

12Boaz was the father of Obed, and Obed was the father of Jesse.

13Jesse was the father of his firstborn Eliab, his second son Abinadab, and his third son Shimea.

14His fourth son was Nethanel, and his fifth was Raddai.

15His sixth son was Ozem, and his seventh was David.

16Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah's sons were Abishai, Joab, and Asahel, three in all.

17Abigail gave birth to Amasa, whose father was Jether the Ishmaelite.

18Caleb, Hezron's son, had children with Azubah, his wife, and also with Jerioth. Azubah's sons were Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon.

19After Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, who gave birth to Hur.

20Hur was the father of Uri, and Uri was the father of Bezalel.

21Later, when Hezron was sixty years old, he married the daughter of Machir, the father of Gilead. She gave birth to Segub.

22Segub was the father of Jair, who controlled twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead.

23Geshur and Aram captured Jair's towns, along with Kenath and its surrounding villages, a total of sixty cities. All these were descendants of Machir, the father of Gilead.

24After Hezron died in Caleb Ephrathah, his wife Abijah gave birth to Ashhur, the father of Tekoa.

25The sons of Jerahmeel, Hezron’s firstborn, were Ram (who was also the firstborn), Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah.

26Jerahmeel had another wife named Atarah, who was the mother of Onam.

27The sons of Ram, Jerahmeel’s firstborn, were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker.

28The sons of Onam were Shammai and Jada. Shammai’s sons were Nadab and Abishur.

29Abishur's wife was named Abihail, and she gave birth to Ahban and Molid.

30Nadab's sons were Seled and Appaim. Seled died without having children.

31Appaim’s son was Ishi. Ishi’s son was Sheshan. Sheshan’s son was Ahlai.

32The sons of Jada, Shammai’s brother, were Jether and Jonathan. Jether died without having children.

33Jonathan’s sons were Peleth and Zaza. These were the sons of Jerahmeel.

34Sheshan had no sons, only daughters. Sheshan also had an Egyptian servant named Jarha.

35Sheshan gave his daughter to his servant Jarha as a wife, and she gave birth to Attai.

36Attai was the father of Nathan, and Nathan was the father of Zabad.

37Zabad was the father of Ephlal; Ephlal was the father of Obed.

38Obed was the father of Jehu; Jehu was the father of Azariah.

39Azariah was the father of Helez; Helez was the father of Eleasah.

40Eleasah was the father of Sismai; Sismai was the father of Shallum.

41Shallum was the father of Jekamiah; Jekamiah was the father of Elishama.

42The sons of Caleb, Jerahmeel’s brother, were Mesha, his firstborn, who was the father of Ziph. The sons of Mareshah were the father of Hebron.

43The sons of Hebron were Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema.

44Shema was the father of Raham, who was the father of Jorkeam. Rekem was the father of Shammai.

45Shammai’s son was Maon. Maon was the father of Beth Zur.

46Ephah, who was Caleb’s concubine, gave birth to Haran, Moza, and Gazez. Haran was the father of Gazez.

47The sons of Jahdai were Regem, Jothan, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph.

48Maacah, Caleb’s concubine, gave birth to Sheber and Tirhanah.

49She also gave birth to Shaaph, the father of Madmannah, Sheva, the father of Machbena, and the father of Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Achsah.

50These were the sons of Caleb, the son of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrathah: Shobal, the father of Kiriath Jearim,

51Salma, the father of Bethlehem, and Hareph, the father of Beth Gader.

52Shobal, the father of Kiriath Jearim, had sons: Haroeh, and half of the Menuhoth.

53The families of Kiriath Jearim were the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites, and the Mishraites. From them came the Zorathites and the Eshtaolites.

54The sons of Salma were Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth Beth Joab, and half of the Manahathites, the Zorites.

55The families of scribes who lived at Jabez were the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and the Sucathites. These are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the house of Rechab.
