Chronicles

Chapter 18

Israel's family story retold.

After this, David defeated the Philistines and conquered them, taking Gath and its surrounding towns from them.

He defeated Moab, and the Moabites became David's subjects and paid him tribute.

David defeated King Hadadezer of Zobah as far as Hamath, when Hadadezer went to extend his control to the Euphrates River.

David captured from him 1,000 chariots, 7,000 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers. David lamed all the chariot horses, but he saved enough for 100 chariots.

When the Arameans from Damascus came to help King Hadadezer of Zobah, David killed 22,000 of their men.

Then David placed garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became David's subjects and paid him tribute. Yahweh gave David victory wherever he went.

David took the gold shields that belonged to Hadadezer's officers and brought them to Jerusalem.

From Tibhath and Cun, cities belonging to Hadadezer, David took a large amount of bronze. Solomon later used this bronze to make the large bronze basin, the pillars, and other bronze vessels.

When King Tou of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of King Hadadezer of Zobah,

he sent his son Hadoram to King David to greet him and congratulate him, because David had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him (for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou). Hadoram brought with him all kinds of articles made of gold, silver, and bronze.

King David also dedicated these to Yahweh, along with the silver and gold he had taken from all the nations: Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and Amalek.

Additionally, Abishai son of Zeruiah killed 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

He placed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David's subjects. Yahweh gave David victory wherever he went.

David reigned over all Israel and showed justice and fairness to all his people.

Joab, Zeruiah's son, was in charge of the army. Jehoshaphat, Ahilud's son, kept the official records.

Zadok, Ahitub's son, and Abimelech, Abiathar's son, were priests. Shavsha was the secretary.

Benaiah, Jehoiada's son, was in command of the Kerethites and Pelethites. David's sons were leading officials who served the king.
