Chronicles

Chapter 16

Israel's family story retold.

They brought God's ark and placed it inside the tent David had set up for it. Then they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings to God.

When David finished offering the burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in Yahweh’s name.

He gave to every Israelite, both men and women, a loaf of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins.

He appointed some Levites to serve in front of Yahweh’s ark, to remember, to thank, and to praise Yahweh, the God of Israel.

Asaph was in charge, followed by Zechariah as second. Then came Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel, who played stringed instruments and harps. Asaph played the cymbals loudly.

Benaiah and Jahaziel, the priests, constantly played trumpets before the ark of God's covenant.

On that day, David first appointed Asaph and his relatives to thank Yahweh.

Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name! Make his deeds known among the nations!

Sing to him! Sing his praises! Tell about all his amazing works!

Boast in his holy name! Let those who look to Yahweh be happy!

Look for Yahweh and his strength! Always seek his presence!

Remember the amazing things he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced.

Remember, you descendants of Israel, his servant, you children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

He is Yahweh, our God. His judgments are for the whole earth.

Remember forever his covenant, the command he gave for a thousand generations,

the agreement he made with Abraham, and his promise to Isaac.

He confirmed it to Jacob as a law, and to Israel as an everlasting covenant,

saying, "I will give you the land of Canaan, which will be your allotted inheritance."

This was when you were only a small number of people, very few, and foreigners living in the land.

They traveled from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another.

He did not allow anyone to harm them. He even warned kings because of them,

saying, "Do not touch my chosen ones! Do not harm my prophets!"

Sing to Yahweh, all the earth! Announce his salvation day after day!

Tell the nations about his glory, and all peoples about his amazing works!

Yahweh is great and deserves much praise. He is to be honored more than all other gods.

Because the gods of other nations are mere idols, but Yahweh made the heavens.

Honor and majesty are always with him. Strength and joy are found where he is.

Give to Yahweh, all you families of the nations, give to Yahweh glory and strength!

Give to Yahweh the glory that his name deserves. Bring an offering and come before him. Worship Yahweh in sacred clothing.

Tremble before him, all the earth. The world is also established so firmly that it cannot be moved.

Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice! Let them announce among the nations, “Yahweh rules!”

Let the sea roar and everything in it! Let the fields be joyful, and everything in them!

Then the trees of the forest will sing for joy before Yahweh, because he is coming to judge the earth.

Oh, give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good; his faithful love lasts forever.

Say, “Save us, God of our salvation! Gather us and rescue us from the nations, so that we may give thanks to your holy name and triumph in praising you.”

Praise Yahweh, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. All the people said, “Amen,” and praised Yahweh.

So David left Asaph and his relatives there in front of the ark of Yahweh’s covenant to serve there continually, performing the daily duties required;

and Obed-Edom and their sixty-eight relatives, including Obed-Edom, the son of Jeduthun, and Hosah, were appointed as doorkeepers;

and Zadok the priest and his fellow priests were in front of Yahweh’s tabernacle at the high place in Gibeon.

They were to offer burnt offerings to Yahweh on the altar of burnt offering continually, morning and evening, exactly as it is written in Yahweh’s law, which he commanded Israel;

and with them were Heman and Jeduthun and the rest of those chosen, who were named to give thanks to Yahweh, because his faithful love lasts forever;

and with them Heman and Jeduthun were responsible for trumpets and cymbals to be played loudly, and for instruments for the songs of God; and the sons of Jeduthun were to be at the gate.

Then every person went home, and David returned to bless his own household.
