David consulted with the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and with every other leader.
David said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If you think it is a good idea, and if it is the will of Yahweh our God, let's send messages everywhere to our relatives remaining in all the land of Israel, and to the priests and Levites in their cities and pasturelands, asking them to join us.
Let's also bring the ark of our God back to us, because we didn't seek it during Saul's reign.”
The whole assembly agreed to do this, because everyone thought it was the right thing to do.
So David gathered all the people of Israel, from the Shihor River in Egypt all the way to the entrance of Hamath, to bring God's ark from Kiriath Jearim.
David went with all Israel to Baalah (also known as Kiriath Jearim) in Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God Yahweh, who sits enthroned between the cherubim and is called by His Name.
They placed God's ark on a new cart and brought it out of Abinadab’s house. Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.
David and all Israel celebrated before God with all their might, singing and playing harps, stringed instruments, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.
When they arrived at Chidon's threshing floor, the oxen stumbled, so Uzza reached out and held the ark.
Yahweh became angry with Uzza, and He struck him down because he had touched the ark. So Uzza died there in the presence of God.
David was upset because Yahweh had struck Uzza. So that place is called Perez Uzza to this day.
David was afraid of God that day and said, “How can I bring God's ark to my home?”
So David did not bring the ark with him into David’s city, but instead took it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.
God’s ark stayed with Obed-Edom’s family in his house for three months. And Yahweh blessed Obed-Edom’s household and everything he owned.
